Do you Practice Proper Mobile Phone Etiquette?

Here in the developed west nearly everyone now has a moble phone. But we all need to remember that around 50% of the worlds population have never received or made a telephone call.

This fact highlights the technological gap that exists between the developing countries and those lucky enough to have affordable access to modern communication technology.

But many would argue that, while mobile phones can be enormously useful, they can also be incredibly irritating. Have you recently used any form of public transport?

I routinely travel by train to and from London and I'm forced to listen to various telephone conversations that, before the mobile phone revolution, would have never taken place. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: 'I'm on the train'. And every day I have to listen to the same people making the same pointless calls, just because they can. What did they do before they had a mobile phone?

I'm also forced to listen to the inane conversations of teenagers that make no sense whatsoever. Their conversations seem to be focused on their boring lives, the television programmes they've been watching or criticising their boyfriends. In one conversation that was heard recently a young lady described a recent sexual experience with a young man in far too much detail. Everyone in the carriage was squirming in their seats with embarrassment as she proceeded to describe her experience, blow by blow.

Being forced to listen to what should be private conversations is just one aspect of modern mobile phone use that is highly anti-social. Another is people who use their mobiles to play their music far too loudly without any thought for others who might not like hip hop music.

We all need to remember how lucky we are to even have mobile phones. They need to be used considerately and ideally they should never be provided to people who use them to loudly describe their sex lives.
